Luxury Brands in today's Digital Era

I twittered it last week: Stella McCartney launched the new version
of her website http://bit.ly/rfG61r with lots of new options,
and it looks quite good. Especially its home page with Nathalia Vodianova
starring in the FW2011 ad campaign. Amazing pics by Mert & Marcus...
I mean, regardless your body type, don't you just want that chunky knit,
and that see-through body hugging dress? I do!

Anyway, back to that website; what I don't understand, is that they launch this super duper website, but there is no space for interaction with STELLA MC CARTNEY fans and enthusiasts, no blog (don't count the Photo and Flicker area), no tweet updates, no Facebook fan page link, no like buttons, nothing.

It amazes me, that brand's like Stella's, which belongs to the Gucci Group, a subsidiary of PPR, still don't get today's digital channels and the changing marketing environment which goes with it. Marketing a brand today isn't a one-way traffic system anymore like it used to be. It's about creating a true relationship with (potential) customers, giving them a voice, a platform.

The other day I had an interesting discussion, with Roman Hänsler, one of the co-founders of
aka-aki.com and he showed me an amazing example of a blog of a German food brand, where over 30
employees, blog about the brand and the food industry in general. Employees blogging about the brand they work for, giving honest opinions.

This is what tomorrow's marketing landscape will look like, and if you don't get that as a brand, you will be missing out on major opportunities in the near future.

Internet with all the information it provides and the many social network platforms gave people a voice. Today's customers are less faithful, and it's harder to create long term relationships with them because of the extensive variety of choice. As a brand you need to truly engage with your customers. It's not just opening a fan page on Facebook, and blurting out tweets without triggering any interaction. It's not solely about showing the customers what you want to show them, but about listening to what your customers think of your brand (*that*'s where the cheap factor of using social network platforms comes in: exit over-expensive marketing research).

All those social media workshops where they teach companies how to open a Facebook page and how to Twitter, but where they always seem to forget to teach the most important thing: how to interact with (potential) customers.

CC: "What's that?" (claps her hands)

"I thought he was going to hit me in the face."

"I saw that in the street three days ago. A man who hit his wife. She deserved it. I was observing them for a while, and I thought to my self, she's going to get one. And I was right."

Reporter: People who recognize you in the street, do they speak to you?

CC: "Yes, Often. Too often, if you ask me. I don't know if you understand, but it's tiring. And then they come to say "hello" to me, and I don't know them, I've never seen them before, I'm convinced I've never ever seen them before. But you have to stay polite and act as if it's all fine. So, we politely shake hands, and then the people I'm with start asking: "Who's that?" and I answer: "I have no idea." "What do you mean, you have no idea?" "Well, I have no idea." "But it seems as if you know them very well." "If it pleases them, I don't mind. But I assure you, I don't know them."

"These girls, you make them wear some pants and they become vulgar. I don't know why. They think they have to move like a dandy. And I say "Oh no, don't walk like that. At all." Then I take off the pants and try them on another girl. With exactly the same result."

"You can very well wear a pair of pants in the country side, it's most practical, you won't be cold, you can get wet a little, it doesn't matter. On top of that, it's me who invented them. Almost twenty years ago."

"I wanted to create decent clothing when out at the beach or something. Because I thought walking around in a bathing suit, we're going to be all naked. So, I thought, even if we're at the beach, it's not hard to create something like pants. A skirt is not pretty. A bath robe is horrible. So, I thought a pair of pants suits the occasion very well."

"Women are very kind, because they're wearing pants all day, but between that and making it into a fashion, and the 70% of ladies who wear pants during a dinner, that's sad."

Reporter: You don't think that pants suit all women?

CC: "No. No, no, no. It suits very young people. It doesn't work when we're a certain age. It gives the impression that we're wearing them to look younger. I think when you try hard to look young, it makes you look even older. It is the stupidest thing a woman can do to herself. Telling her self "If I am going to wear pants I'll look younger than when I'll wear a skirt." It's crazy!".... Enfin. It is a funny period, we're living in. Women are becoming.... I don't know what. Another sex? I don't know how these women see them selves, to be doing that. Wearing pants won't change their faces, you see."(laughs)

"They do pants. I do pants. We don't like skirts anymore. We like pants. And so I make them. And it shows how much I have changed, because two years ago I would have said, I don't give a toss what everyone does, I don't care. They can do whatever they want to, I will not make pants."

Reporter: How do you create all the variety in your collections while staying loyal to your self at the same time?

CC: "Ah, because I think when we become incoherent, we have to start all over again, and again. It's unacceptable. Unfortunately it happens. There are designers out there, very talented ones, but they change fashion every week. And that's why I personally wanted to create a style, because if I had to create something new every week, I wouldn't be able to do that. Impossible. We'd end up creating ugly things." (laughs)

"If we were a little bit protected, we could keep the prestige. I have the impression, that we're loosing the prestige. We've lost couture completely last year. To the Italians. We let them walk all over us. Because the Italians, you see, organize the week of all that, very well. They have people there officially - no idea where they went looking for those – they don't come from the street though. It's a former ambassador, who takes care of Couture, well brought up, charming. To bother all these people, you better make sure you'll entertain them. You open La Scala, hire people, try to entertain all these people who are there. And what do we do in France? Zero. We show them naked people, as if it's something new and interesting." (laughs)

"Women's fashion was always made in France. Always. Always. Always. And the biggest buyers of all that, were the Russians. That's funny, isn't it? All the Russians got dressed in Paris. The moment they had the means to do that. But they were extremely well off. Today, they dress them selves in bags (laughs). But it's better than last year."

Reporter: Really?

"Yes. I have a Russian friend who went back last year, and who told me it was an unpalatable misery. While today it is more like a poor country. That's all."

"I don't think France will win anything by separating it self from all that."

"I've been fighting for two years with all the couturiers for those mini skirts. Because I find them indecent. I am not from this period, you know. To show off your knees, they have to be really beautiful knees. They're joints. It's like showing off your elbows. Look, like this "Oh look how cute they are my elbows." It's awful, all that! You know what happens to me these days? I enter certain restaurants and when men look at me, they start applauding me. Because I said two words about how awful it is to show off knees. That it was rarely beautiful, that it is unnecessary. And if you study the human body, you know that when you have bad knees, you have bad hips. We're large in that area. We're build to give birth to children. That's not what you should show men. You should show your self as a young boy.

I don't have anything against knees, if they are beautiful. But when they're not beautiful... Go sit on a bench in the street and tell me how many people you see passing by with beautiful legs. You can't image how bad knees can be: knock-knees, fat knees, knees that become a bit purple... Oh it's awful! No. And I also think if we show all that, we don't want anything anymore. It's like people who stuff them selves with food and someone shows up with a nice piece of cake they like, and you're like “No thank you. Not today.” It's a bit like that."

Reporter: Your problem is to make sure that women remain pretty and distinguished looking.

CC: "Not too over dressed though. Dressed as a woman, but not imitating some, some... All that is a horrible mix. You see, Paris is loosing its prestige. It becomes vulgar, and it never used to be. No matter what we did, it was always delightful. And there should be some kind of protocol for dinner time. Everything is wretched in France. You invite people for dinner at 8, and people arrive at 10 in the evening. They think it's completely normal. Which means that we eat poorly. If there was one privilege we are well known for in France, is for eating well. We eat poorly. Where can we invite people for dinner at 8, which is a reasonable hour for everyone, 8 o'clock, everybody will be there at 8.15, perfect, we sit, we can have dinner, go out afterwards, if we want. But all that is changing. It's a trend. When some chic lady throws a dinner party at 10, they all start throwing dinner parties at 10.30 afterwards, to be chicer than she is. It's so stupid! I believe we're heading for total craziness, you see. And that bothers me a lot. Because I think stupidity is the worst of all. We can forgive everything except stupidity. And these are stupid things."

For his latest haute couture collection, Lagerfeld told the press that he was inspired by the work of Marie Laurencin and this painting of Coco Chanel in particular. While Laurencin was designing a ballet commissioned by Diaghilev, called Les Biches, for which Cocteau wrote the scenario, Chanel was designing Le Train Blue for the ballet impresario. She asked Laurencin, to paint her, but the languor and sweetness of the portrait weren't pleasing to Chanel, so she turned it down. Today the painting hangs in Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris... Why do some girls just"have it". That little something that makes them into style icons, it girls? A part from some celebrity status, there are only a few who cut it. Alexa Chung, as we all know, is one of those girls. Incredibly beautiful, with a pair of legs we all dream of, the British rose, blossomed from teenage model, to MTV presenter, to it girl and style icon. Her style, which she describes as preppy-meets-grandma-meets-skanky-older-brother, continues to fascinate the fashion pack, which landed her modeling campaigns such as Pepe and her own range and campaign for Made Well. And well deserved, she took home this year's British Style Award, at last weeks British Fashion Awards, held in London.

If there is one historical fashion persona who
inspired me, it is Elsa Schiaparelli.
Her shocking pink (which girl doesn't like pink
at one stage in her life?), her imagination
and creativity, her intellect (she was extremely
cultivated), her ties with the art world
and her numerous collaborations with
legendary artists like Dali and Cocteau...
But what inspired me most, was her independency,
her rebelling against her privileged background,
coming to Paris as a single mom. Starting her
career in fashion in rue du Plâtre (like me)
with her first collection and boutique
"Pour le sport" in 1927 (me in 1997 as an intern
at L'OFFICIEL (HQ Editions Jalou @ rue du Plâtre).
And her work continues to inspire...

The end of november till the holidays is always an exciting periode in fashion,
while all the ad campaigns are being shot for the upcoming spring summer season.
The first PRADA SS2011 campaign pics, shot by Meisel are out, and this is what
they look like:

What do you think? I love the light. And Maria Carla looks absolutely

stunning in that denim ensemble.

To me Meisel continues to be fashion photographer number one, while he

never fails in making a collection or a piece of cloth desirable. I mean,

when I saw the collection back in September, I loved it, but not necessarily

to wear my self - You know how fashion editors can review a collection,

but would never want to be seen in it -

Then Meisel puts it on film (I know, digital camera's don't need film,

call me old fashioned :-) and I just want to buy it:

Those banana skirts, ridiculous?

Yes, but I want one after having seen these pics.

Those black and blue striped pants?

Oh yes, I totally see me wearing those during the summer holidays with

a pair of easy going espadrilles in the south of France.

Clutches vs Totes

Clutches, as mentioned in my bio, are my thing. You'll hardly see me with a hand bag bigger than the size of a book. I find them utterly feminine and I always think, that girls who carry their entire life with them, look kind of desperate. Whereas the girl with the clutch goes through life with an air of "I have nothing to loose".... And uhm yes, more than one lipstick (instead of five), one bank card (instead of an entire wallet), and one little perfume sample vial (instead of the entire 100 ml bottle), there isn't much to loose. Not only are you forced to make choices, gone are all the back problems, since the day I left my totes (ooo beloved Birkin) in my cupboard. Totes, the size of entire tents, mind you, which I carried with me, for a big part of my life. Oh, and my MacBook? It's called a MULBERRY for Apple sleeve.

Anyway, style.com put up 347 clutches for the upcoming spring summer. I made a selection of my favorite 32 clutches, which you can check out on my Facebook page.

The most catching article and must-read of the week, was Suzy Menkes' "Cyber Craft" for NOWNESS. As many luxury brands and conglomerates, Menkes asks her self the question: Is there still future in the past? Meaning if past & heritage of luxury brands are still of importance to market a product. If those brand values still make a difference to the millennial generation, so used to the here and now, through smart phones, instant text messaging, unlimited internet, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

As you can see here, past is something I try to refer to frequently, if not, always. To me it gives a product so much more depth, whether it is a pair of heels, a bag, a piece of clothing, a written article or a fashion shoot. History, craftsmanship, knowledge it's like family history. Knowing where it comes from. It amazes me, that todays generation with the entire world and beyond on their screen, doesn't realize the privilege of all that information, instantly available. Seriously, it wasn't that long ago, that google did not exist, and for information on a certain topic one actually had to go to the library, a museum, an archive, or travel, or buy a book. Sometimes many books. Today, you just click, and most of it is all there, on your Mac, iPhone or Blackberry screen. How come today's generation hardly uses it? I recently had a talk to a teacher at the Italian fashion institute Marangoni, here in Paris. She told me that most of the 20 year old students didn't even know how to properly do a research at the internet. It left me speechless. But what surprises me even more is that marketeers for major brands start to have doubts about the importance of the heritage of the brand they are working for. Why give in? Look at style.com, vogue.fr, nowness, anothermag.com etc. they all use the past to refer to. That's what sets these media platforms a part from those that only show case current products accompanied by paparazzi pics of todays celebrities. And it sets the professionals working for these magazines and websites a part from those who don't. I know girls with a few years of working experience for a fashion magazine, who shop constantly and therefore consider themselves real fashion girls, ready to be the editor in chief for important titles, but have no clue who mister Worth was, or what the difference between ready-to-wear and haute couture is. I am not joking (and I will tell about this specific girl in another blog post real soon).

Anyway, back to Suzy Menkes' "Cyber Craft". She finished the article with a Goethe quote, Lagerfeld's mantra: "Make a better future by developing elements from the past." Perfect answer, don't you think?

So, what was this week's Must Read? I know, the news broke last week, but I am still shocked about LVMH acquiring 17% of HERMÈS. And apparently I wasn't the only one, both Bertrand Puech and Patrick Thomas, HERMÈS executives were less than pleased after Bernard Arnault announced he had bought 17 percent of HERMÈS. Arnault, head of LVMH, and infamous for his aggressive takeovers in the luxury industry insisted he isn't trying for a hostile takeover, calling himself a "friendly" shareholder. AHN reported: “If you want to be friendly, Mr. Arnault, you should withdraw,” HERMÈS executives Bertrand Puech and Patrick Thomas reportedly told French daily newspaper Le Figaro. Puech is a fifth-generation heir of Hermes’ founder Emile Hermes, while Thomas is the family owned firm’s manager. The pair alleged Arnault’s tactics in taking the stake were questionable and said they hoped the financial services watchdog would investigate. I mean, quelle horreur, if LVMH would take over the majority of stakes in this beautiful french luxury house, and our Birkins and Kellies would be made in China! Yes, yes, yes, it's all grand that mr Arnault made luxury into something accessible, or at least made us believe it is. But the whole point of luxury should be, that it is LUXURY, and thus not easily accessible. Louis Vuitton just became the Mc Donalds of Fashion. I mean, you're almost ridiculous if you walk around with a LV logo (unless it's seriously vintage (so, no, not bought in 2006!). It would be one of my biggest nightmares if he somehow gets his way, and changes the HERMÈS legend into a today's Walt Disney tale... What do you think?

Furthermore, Anna dello Russo twittered yesterday, that Garance Doré, just shot her first editorial for Japanese Vogue. What I think about that? Well, I think, Garance is lovely and her blog, as girly and neurotic as it sometimes might be, is a fun read. Very accessible, which is why girls all around the world love it so much. Is it VOGUE? No, I don't think it is. VOGUE is a dream, a fairytale. VOGUE is about inspiring, aspiring, dreaming, perfection. Anna dello Russo is VOGUE. Carine is VOGUE. Giovanna is VOGUE. Emmanuelle is VOGUE, Anna, Tonne and Grace are VOGUE. But Garance? Garance is ELLE. Don't you think?

Then there was Kate's last collection for TOPSHOP. Thank God. I never understood why she went for more than one line anyway. I mean, it sells yes. But did she really want to go that mainstream? So, yes, great move this ending. It's time for something new Miss Moss. What about that Dior rumor???

We also got some sneak peaks of LANVIN for H&M this week. The LANVIN dream for H&M prices... However for Mr Elbaz, this week wasn't just about H&M. Accompanied by actress Kristin Thomas Scott - who currently stars in the recently released movie Sarah's Key, after the French bestseller by Tatiana de Rosnay (published by my dear friends & neighbors Gillou & Hélo, yes!) - Elbaz introduced "his" Christmas Windows for Printemps to the public last Wednesday. I didn't have a look yet, but will let you know about them as soon as I do. They're on display until Christmas, so there's still some time... TATAFORNOW♥

Trend Report S/S 2011 - The Fall of the House of Usher

Back to the trend reports... White dresses were every where. Ever since I watched La Chute de la Maison d'Usher (1928) by Epstein & Buñuel - after Poe's short story The Fall of the House of Usher (1839) - white dresses creep me out a bit. Watching the movie was a creative prep for a haute couture shoot with the immensely talented Raphael Gianelli Meriano for 34 Magazine, for which I used to be the fashion director. The story has been filmed by many directors, but the Epstein/ Buñuel version, is seriously one of the scariest movies I've seen. Spooky but crazy inspiring visuals...

Georgian Fashion Week S/S 2011

If you're planning a trip to Tbilisi, take the following advise from a true fashion girl - or like the lovely Tato, my new Georgian BFF, put it: An Amazingly Adorable Capricious Fashion Princess (yep, that's me, whahaha!):

1) Leave your Pigalles at home. Believe me, Tbilisi on 12 cm Louboutins equals suicide!

2) Do not bring fur coats with you the end of October, thinking it's probably cold. I found myself with a suitcase full of winter outfits while it was 22 degrees...  
3) If hot headed, or slightly suffering from ADHD syndrome, do not stay more than 15 minutes in a sulphur bath. Your head will explode and you will feel all bubbly thinking that you're completely re-energized but all you really are is stoned, or at least your body is, because you won't be able to move for an hour or so... 

4) If you want to keep your waist and your flat stomach, stay away from Georgian food. They keep you eating, those Georgians. And when you think, dinner or lunch is over, it only just started and the next delicious dish will be served. So, S T A Y A W A Y F R O M T H E F O O D !

5) If you're there to cover Georgian fashion Week (hey, maybe we will meet next time!), please visit the State Academy of Art where most of the fashion designers studied, go visit F-Labour, the store where these young designers sell their collections and go have a look at the multi brand store Prive. It will completely change your outlook on Georgian fashion.

Anyway, yes, it took me almost a week to digest the experience of the second edition of Georgian fashion week ...and the many, many, many Georgian delicacies...Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia is a strange mixture of never ending contradictions. Its beauty, history, and wealth go hand in hand with traces of war, communism and poverty. The Mother of Georgia statue, also known as Kartilis Deda, located on top of the Sololaki Mountain, is the epitome of these contradictions: she's holding a bocal of wine in her left hand to welcome people to Georgia, and Tbilisi in particular, while her left hand is holding a menacing sword, to warn enemies...

Mademoiselle Perle was invited to her first trip to Georgia by the ever so beautiful Sofia Chkonia to attend the SS2011 collections by Georgian designers. That bocal of wine, symbol of Georgian hospitality, translated in a jammed packed schedule, where private chauffeurs, a mini coach, two Guardian Angels, numerous restaurants, after parties, champagne and vodka were at our disposal 24/7. After visiting national treasures like the said Mother of Georgia statue, the national museum and the costume museum, followed by delicious but heavy Georgian lunches, the days continued with eight shows. Eight different designers mostly from Georgia, with a few exceptions like the Parisian designer Gaspard Yurkievich, André Tan from Kiev and the Italian trio A-lab Milano.

My first impression of Georgia's fashion was the opening show on Friday evening October 22,of one of Georgia's most established designers Avtandil. The show was held on the Metechi Bridge crossing the Mt'k'vari river, better known as the Kura. Surrounded by mountains, and high lighted monuments and churches, the setting was almost surreal.

The following three days, the young designers showed their collections mainly at the Rustaveli Theatre right next to the Marriot hotel, where yours truly was staying with an interesting fashion crowd from all over the world: the charming Phivos Istavrioglou @Vogue Greece, the lovely Zoe Maughan @Another Magazine, the hilarious Sophie Trem and her gorgeous collegue Claire Khoriaty @TRANOÏ, stylist Catherine Baba, mr Godfrey Deeny @Fashion Wire Daily, Julia Melkonova Zaalishvili @Vogue Russia, the cooky Beth Arnold @The Huffington Post accompanied by her husband Jim, and the London based Yvan Rodić, better known as The Face Hunter. As my impression of the city, the collections were as diverse as possible. One moment we were watching a gypsy inspired show which mainly consisted of fringed colourful scarves wrapped around shoulders, hips and ankles, designed by Goga Nikabadze. The other, we were put front row to watch Keti Chikvadze's hand crafted lady birds on elegant black jackets, or Bicholla's fluffy heels - he offered me a pair, and they're mental! Highly photogenic but seriously mental! Love them!

However, my favorite collection was a minimalist one in red, off-white and black by the 23 years- old Tata Nikolaishvili. She's still finishing her studies at the State Art Academy of Georgia, but I already see a promising career. Her experimenting with cut, form and texture, while respecting the female body should get her an internship at Jil Sander, Calvin Klein or Celine. I was sincerely surprised to see this kind of approach to fashion in Tbilisi. But a trip to the multi brand store Prive, explains quite a lot. To my big surprise their best seller is Dries van Noten - whose influence was noticable amongst some young designers - Chloé and Marc Jacobs come next, and they just introduced Alaïa and Balmain. Alaïa! In Georgia! Where were all these fabulous dressed women who bought their outfits at Prive? According to CEO Anna Bokeria, Prive's clientele is quite diversified. Georgian upper class women but also the female elite from surrounding countries like Armenia and Azerbaijan, find their way to Prive. Why didn't I spot some during the shows? The shop has two different locations, one for day wear, where they sell brands like Dries van Noten, Marc Jacobs, Chloé, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and Balmain. And men's wear from brands like Givenchy, Dior Homme and again Dries van Noten. A clean designed store evoking that Ford for Gucci touch from a decade ago. Around the corner a very lady like two storey shop with powder-y, jade green walls with a trompe l'oeil effect of french inspired ornaments painted in roughly white strokes. Very Dior Paris. This boutique of Prive focusses on evening wear, and has a delicious collection of LBD's by Alaïa, YSL and Dior. An exquisite collection of heels and bags at the first floor makes this place quite a shopping paradise. It left me speechless, although, I quickly bounced back to my talkative self and bombarded my lovely Gigi, interior decorator, and one of my two guardian angels with all sorts of questions. He told me that the Bagrationi dynasty, the ruling family of Georgia (early Middle Ages - early 19th century) was famous for its fabulous costumes, and parties. And that the Georgian sense of style (Alaïa! Helloho!) is rooted in that part of their rich history. I still have to go into that history, but it definitely awakened a curiosity to get to know this country better.... What about spending winter holidays in Georgia? Did you know they have a ski resort over there??? TATAFORNOW♥

Coucou, I'm sorry for the silence, but I just came back from a trip to Tbilisi, where I covered the second edition of Georgia Fashion Week. More about that, in the days to come.
